THE NEXT STEP / ISSUE 01
No tech title yet? Show how you think.
A free learning opportunity, a stronger way to describe your experience, and resources worth keeping.

LEARN IT. PRACTICE IT. PROVE IT.
|
|
Trying to enter technology without an IT job title can feel like a closed loop: you need experience to get hired, but you need a job to gain experience.
There is no shortcut around the work. But you can make your actual experience clearer and add verifiable learning to your record. This issue focuses on both.
|
|
01 / THE BIG PICTURE
A job title isn't the whole story.
The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET profile for computer user support specialists identifies troubleshooting, user communication, documentation, and appropriate escalation among the work performed in IT support.
Some of those habits are developed in other roles, including customer service, administration, and operations. The key is to explain what you actually did, while making clear which technical skills you're still learning.
|
|
|
02 / THE CAREER ADVANTAGE
A free course you can show you've completed.

CISCO NETWORKING ACADEMY
IT Customer Support Basics
FREE • ABOUT 4 HOURS • BEGINNER • DIGITAL BADGE
Cisco's self-paced introduction covers help desk communication, troubleshooting processes, documentation, and remote-support concepts. It is an accessible way to add a specific learning achievement to your professional record.
What to do with it: After earning the course's badge, list it under Professional Development and link to the verification on LinkedIn if available. A course badge is not the same as a Cisco professional certification or paid work experience.

03 / RESUME INSIGHT
Describe the work, not just the title.
If your previous role involved helping customers, resolving issues, or coordinating responses, that experience may support your move toward IT. The wording should show the relevant actions rather than making an unrelated job sound technical.
|
TOO GENERIC
"Helped customers with problems."
MORE SPECIFIC, IF ACCURATE
"Resolved customer inquiries, documented recurring issues, and escalated complex requests to the appropriate team."
|
Only use statements you can support. Add real tools, results, or numbers when you have them; never invent technical duties or metrics.
